Why I have these books: Because I have boys. I've had most of them for about ten years, but I had to buy the fifth one, because apparently we didn't have it. (My older boys borrowed it from a friend.)
Great series for boys around age 10... give or take a few years. I liked them, so I think just about anyone would enjoy them. I didn't like having to wait another day after I finished the fourth one and the fifth one still hadn't arrived.
I still have younger kidlets, so these books are definite keepers.
There is some violence, as you would normally see in books about America during this time period. I don't recall any swearing.
