Letters on an Elk Hunt (Elinore Pruitt Stewart)

Why I have this book: I bought it years ago after I read the first book, Letters of a Woman Homesteader, which I reviewed earlier in this blog.

I really loved this book. I gave it 5 stars on Goodreads. I gave the first book 4 stars, because I was a little bothered by the overuse of the n-word (which was common for that time period). Both books are so delightfully written, and I wish I could be friends with the author. She is just a really neat person. Well, she was... she passed away in the early 1930's, according to Wikipedia.

I don't even know what else to say. I loved the book and I love that she wrote letters to chronicle her experiences that are so wonderful to read, and that they were kept and published. I love that she knew all the rules about lie, lay, lain, etc. I'm sad she died so young (57). I'll be thinking about this book for a while.

Clean, other than I believe the n-word was used a couple of times, at least once in a song title. But again, it was just part of that era, and not used with the intent to be offensive.

The Mistletoe Secret (Richard Paul Evans)

Why I have this book: I borrowed it from the ebook library. I was on hold before Christmas, if I remember correctly, and I was so far down the list that I thought I might not get it until next Christmas, but it came up this past week.

I liked it. I gave it 3 stars on Goodreads. It may have gotten 4 stars, but the ending fell a little flat for me. Still, up to that point, I was definitely invested to see how it all played out.

Two Books by Haven Kimmel

Why I have these books: I read both of these books years ago in a book club. I think I borrowed them at the time, so when they each came up for sale for a good price on Kindle, I purchased them.

I really liked both of these books. The writing is enjoyable to read, and there's so much deep stuff without it being depressing or overwhelming. I liked them both enough to do some research to find out what happened next. They are books that I couldn't wait to get back to when I had to stop reading (to do other required life stuff) and now that I've finished them, I'm still thinking about them.

Clean, although there is an occasional swear word, plus a slight irreverence about Jesus, but in a way that also shows a fondness and connection.
